NEA Jazz Master Richard Davis is one of the most important bassists in the history of jazz, a living legend. In addition to his own sessions, he has played with everyone from Eric Dolphy, Miles Davis, Andrew Hill, Sarah Vaughan and Dexter Gordon to Frank Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen and Van Morrison. DownBeat named him Best Bassist from 1967-74, and he has played under the conduction of Igor Stravinsky, Pierre Boulez, Gunther Schuller, and Leonard Bernstein.
A longtime professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Davis has won many awards for teaching, community activism and his music. He founded the Richard Davis Foundation for Young Bassists, Inc., which brings in masterful bass instructors/performers to teach young bassists.
